The history of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University begins with the foundation of The Higher Teacher Training College in 1954. The College became The Pedagogical Institute in 1959 and later the Faculty of Education was founded in 1964.

The modern history of the university started from November 1989. The Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem was set up and solemnly inaugurated on the 28th of September 1991, with three faculties and an institute.

The passing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) in 1998 was a turning point for the university's existence, namely in regard to its organization and position as well as financing. In accordance with the new HEA considerable organizational changes also took place at the university.

The Institute of Production Technology and Management was established on the 1st of December 1998. The Institute was set up by a group of academics who originally worked in the Department of Technical Education at the Faculty of Education.

The Institute of Production Technology and Management was the culmination of an endeavour to open a technically-oriented course at university supported by the industrial sphere. This achievement can be viewed as a university's attempt to guarantee technical education in the whole region where industrial production plays a significant role.

Instruction has always taken place in Ústí nad Labem, the capital of the region. Since the academic year 2002/2003 the institute expanded its activities and opened a combined form of its most successful bachelor degree program in the field of ‘Production Management’ in a separate location in Chomutov. Although there were attempts to offer full-time study in Chomutov, it was never realized due to a lack of interest.

The Institute of Production Technology and Management became, with the approval of Accreditation Committee, The Faculty of Production Technology and Management UJEP on the 1st of September 2006.

At present, the university already consists of 7 faculties and 1 institute. Total number of students at UJEP exceeds 11 000.

The faculty prepares technoeconomically-oriented graduates in bachelor, master and doctoral degree programs of ‘Engineering Technology’, bachelor and master degree programs of ‘Engineering’ and also students in bachelor degree programs of ‘Energetics’ and ‘Specialization in Pedagogy’. The faculty still aspire to expand the study program offer, focused on technically-oriented graduates.
