Department of Machines and Mechanics

The Department of Machines and Mechanics (DMM) is one of the technical specialized department of the faculty.

It provides education in mathematic, teoretical and design-oriented engineering courses in the bachelor and continuing master degree programs. The bachelor degree program offers subjects common base such as Mathematics and Constructive Geometry, basic technical subjects such as Mechanics, Technical Drawing, Technical Measurements, Thermomechanics and Hydromechanics and also specialized subjects to develop student´s knowledge of Engineering Components, Machines and Equipment, CAD, Production lines, Automation, Technical Diagnostics and Reliability etc. The department provides instruction for the master degree program in profiling subjects (i.e. Thermal Equipment, Machine Mechanisms, Mechatronics, Construction and use of robots, Industrial Processes, etc.). The department is involved in teaching in the bachelor's and master's degrees more than 30% of the subjects taught in all fields of study.

Besides teaching in engineering, the department participates in the preparation of students in the field of “Specialization in Pedagogy”, which covers topics of the following subjects: Technical Mechanics, Introduction to Engineering, Machines and Equipment, etc. The department has students in doctoral studies.

The department members, apart from instructors, act as the head of student´s final bachelor and diploma work (theses). Each year 10 to 15 student´s topics are being successfully completed.

Also significant is the scientific research and project activities of the department. Department in the past dealt with a series of basic research grants. In this issue the department continues in the form of doctoral dissertations, and in particular by internal grants UJEP. Department regularly deals with development projects of the Ministry of Education.

Research results are published in the form of personnel department of articles in professional journals and conferences in the Czech Republic and abroad, in the form of monographs. Publication activity of some department´s members is very extensive.

Activities outside the university are extensive, in some cases, through the Faculty of Science and Technology Park. These activities provide the organization of specialized courses for businesses and organizations, as well as direct assistance to companies in the form of task solution and technical development (e.i. Ferox Děčín, Bronswerk s. r. o. Benešov n. Pl.).

The Department also cooperates with Czech and foreign universities, technical direction, mainly with the departments of mechanics, energy engineering, construction and machine parts (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague; Faculty of Military Technology UO Brno; Faculty of Mechanical Engineering ŽU in Žilina, SK; Faculty of Mechanical Engineering TU Košice, SK; etc.).
Significant cooperation of the faculty is also with the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, especially the link with the Institute of Thermomechanics, the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and furthermore with Research and Test Institute Plzeň s.r.o., with Railway Research Institute, Dynamic Test Station Cerhenice and TÜV – Motor Vehicle Research Institute.


Department organizes an expert conference called “Dynamics of Rigid and Deformable Bodies” with international participation. In 2014 this conference will held for the 12 th. From 2014 department organizes a conference called “Experimental and computational methods in Engineering” which is intended for young scientists.
The Department has considerable reserves in the physical space, especially in the quality of laboratories and attempts to achieve improvement in this area. Among the significant achievements mention ensuring the noise and vibration laboratories, the thermomechanics and instrumentation for measuring temperature laboratories, acceleration, displacement and other quantities. The department has also managed to provide software for computational modeling and simulation.

The total number of the department pedagogical members is 12, including 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 7 lecturers and further 4 full-time PhD students.
